Breakfast on the terrace, where the European Union flag was flying…. I wonder what it’s hidden message is??
The morning walk was absolutely glorious, taking us high into the hills of Cantabria, with amazing views of a luscious grasslands and woodland, filled with cows, sheep, donkeys horses, and even llamas. The scent in the air was heavy with eucalyptus and figs, and although there were a couple of rain showers, the rain was warm and most of the day the sun was warming but not too hot. Coming down from the hills we entered into the ancient medieval town of Laredo, which, after some lovely, medieval winding streets, gave onto a rather large urban sprawl and a huge shell shaped 5 km beach
The planned route was along the 5km of beach for a short 10 min ferry crossing to Santona, but we decided not to bother with that extra 5 km and instead treated ourselves to a one hour ferry ride that took us post an amazing lighthouse.
Dinner was my first paella of the Camino, delicious and accompanied by sardines for which Santona is famous. We also heard from Marissa and Emma, who had just arrived in Laredo, and made plans to meet them off the ferry for breakfast the next morning.
